While on every March 8th, countries all over the world celebrate the International Women’s Day, the Minister of Human Rights, Social Affairs and Gender calls on women to participate in innovative programs because they are the pillars of sustainable development.
Martin Nivyabandi, Minister of Human Rights, Social Affairs and Gender, says women are the center of sustainable development. “The celebration of that day is an opportunity to evaluate their role as the pillar of sustainable development for their families as well as their country and to choose priorities for the defense of women rights”.
He says the theme of this year implies all actors especially those working in the social protection sector. “They are called to initiate innovative programs that focus on women in order to strengthen their role as the pillar of peace and development”.
Mr. Nivyabandi says Burundian women have to be empowered. “When a woman brings nothing as a contribution to the family, denigration and disagreements arise in the family,” he says, adding that there will be a self-development sensitization campaign in the country.
Festivities marking the commemoration of the International Women’s Day in Burundi will take place in the political capital city of Gitega this Friday 8 March 8, 2019 under the theme: “Women in the center of innovative social protection programs”.
