These days, there are motorcyclists who are involved in a series of theft in the evening. Passengers walking on foot are called to be careful.-By Yves Didier Irakoze
Thieves take advantage of dark and isolated places where there is no big movement of people. They also like long streets or bends on the road to avoid to be seen. They steal cell phones while people are using them in the street, handbags containing laptops, women’s handbags or other affairs.
Very often, they are two or three on a motorcycle, the motorcyclist and one or two passengers who seem to be his clients but who are in reality his accomplices. O. Nibigira is one passenger who came across the case but he fortunately succeeded to keep his affairs tightly and escape. “It was around 6 and 7 p.m. when leaving my office. When I was walking at Mao Avenue in Rohero area on my way to Nyakabiga, I heard suddenly a motorcycle with 3 passengers on it coming behind me and I moved my bag containing a laptop to the right hand. Next, the motorcyclist rode very quickly. He was about to fall down when suddenly he succeeded to run away,” points out Nibigira. Arnaud Niyonishimiye mentioned that it was around 8 p.m. near SOS kindergarten school while he was walking with his friends carrying a laptop in his bag. “Sharply, I felt my handbag taken away by two people on a motorcycle who escaped very quickly. I even screamed for help but in vain,” regrets Niyonishimiye. O.M is a lady living in Nyakabiga who has also been robbed of her cell phone and her handbags at night. She fell down at that moment and found herself injured.
The police are aware of the evil
According to “OPC1” Herménégilde Harimenshi, Spokesman of the Police, these cases of robbery are known and handled by the police.
“Strategies have been taken to punish the actors and we have already caught many of them; more than 100 motorcycles used in this activity have been seized in order to discourage this kind of theft,” highlights Harimenshi. He adds unfortunately that those who are supposed to protect the population, very often policemen, are sometimes involved in these kinds of robbery. “That’s why we call upon people to stay vigilant, have the reflex of protecting each other and denounce the actors,” states Harimenshi. Therefore, Harimenshi is satisfied that these days the population works hand in hand with the police to denounce these types of gangs. He concludes that they will always do their best to fight against this threat.
