Four universities have been qualified in the semi-final of the national contest to plead for the victims’ causes. The semi-final for the national contest has taken place at the University of Burundi, this 29 November. The universities of “ Lumière de Bujumbura, “ Lac Tanganyika” , “ISCAM” and High Institute of Police Officers will compete in the final contest set on 30 November.
All contestants have to present their arguments about a fictitious case where they are required to denounce the situations of human rights violations.
Merveille Mugisha, one of the contestants from the “Université du Lac Tanganyika” says this competition has pushed her to do research and make improvement in her field. “I know now how to qualify some crimes and consult the international jurisdiction tools,” she says.
Daddy Oumarou, in charge of communication at the International Conference for Red Cross -ICRC, which organized the competition in collaboration with the University of Burundi, says the competition will improve the students’ knowledge. “Students should act as lawyers who are defending the victims and should know how to behave in some circumstances,” says Oumarou.
Not only does this competition improve the academic knowledge, but also, it allows contestants to raise awareness of their colleagues who are the future decision-makers. The winners at the final stage of the competition will represent the country in the Regional Great Lakes Countries’ Contest. Ten universities had participated in the national contest. Each university was represented by two students from the faculty of law.
