Gogo Hukportie, UNHCR representative in Burundi, says this equipment is given to facilitate the monitoring of border areas in order to verify the presence of returnees especially spontaneous returnees registered as refugees in the asylum countries.

She also says this equipment will help the police at the border to perform an effective cross-border coordination with Tanzania but also in various official ports of entry where the migration police run field offices with a dedicated staff.

Jimmy Hatungimana, Commissioner for Migrations in Burundi, says he appreciates the donation as it will help them face some challenges they meet when registering returnees. “Sometimes, it is difficult to welcome a large number of refugees without having logistical facilities. The equipment will help to adequately welcome back those refugees”.

This equipment will be used in 4 communes which receive a big number of refugees namely Giteranyi in Muyinga province, Gisuru in Ruyigi, Kayogoro in Makamba and Busoni in Kirundo.
The equipment is made of 7 motorcycles, office and information technology tools.
