Jean Marie Niyokindi, Minister of Trade, Industry and Tourism said sugar wholesalers are involved in the sugar shortage that has occurred in Bujumbura city these days. “Wholesalers hide sugar instead of distributing it to retailers,” he said adding that the latter then speculate about its price.
The Minister also said the price of a kg of sugar varies between BIF 2600 and 3000 compared to the official price fixed at BIF 2400. “The sugar company-Sosumo didn’t reduce the quantity it provides each month which is estimated between 2500 and 2700 tones,” he added.
Mr. Niyokindi said his ministry is aware of the speculation and different measures have been imposed to fight against speculators. Since 6 March, five sugar stores were closed in Mukaza commune in Bujumbura city. In addition, he said, those who will be caught will pay some fines and the seized sugar will be sold to the public.
Trade Minister called on consumers to denounce all traders who speculate on the sugar price. He also exhorted the administrative officials to supervise the distribution of sugar in their respective localities.
