Colonel Gaspard Baratuza, Burundi Army spokesperson, says the Islamist group “El-Shaabab” has ambushed the Burundian peacekeeping troops’ convoy in Somalia, this 7 February in the afternoon. He also says three Burundian peacekeeping troops have been seriously injured and evacuated to hospital for treatment. “Others have been immediately treated on the spot”, he says. But sources in Somalia say the ambush has killed two troops and 12 others have been injured, among them four seriously wounded.

Burundi first contributed to the war against Islamic Militancy in Somalia by providing 850 soldiers in 2008 and is currently providing over 5,000 troops to fight for the African Union’s Peacekeeping Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
