Over the last week, residents of Mugomere and Birimba, two districts in the municipality of Rumonge (southern province), found black crosses drawn on their walls and fences overnight.
Sources on the spot claim that the crosses were drawn by Imbonerakure [youth affiliated to the ruling CNDD-FDD party] on homes of people who are not members of that party.
Célestin Nitanga, Rumonge municipal authority, refutes the accusation saying that the crosses were drawn not only on homes of political opponents but also on homes of members of the ruling party. “The police are carrying out investigations to determine the culprits”, he says.
Nitanga goes on to say that Mugomere and Birimba are inhabited in majority by people who are not members of the ruling party. The recent event comes to destabilize the area where people of different political backgrounds were living in harmony.
Residents say they don’t know why the crosses were drawn on their homes and ask the police to help find out the motives of the culprits.
