Rights Commission concerned over targeted killings

Sixte Vigny Nimuraba, Chairman of the National Independent Commission for Human Rights-CNIDH says there is a need to conduct investigations on killings reported in different localities. “Even though the commission hasn’t yet conducted investigations on cases reported in different localities, the criminal responsibility is individual,” he says.

On 24 February, a youth affiliated to the CNDD-FDD ruling party was shot dead by unidentified people in Mahango locality in Matana commune of Bururi province and over 10 people were arrested for investigation. On February 20, Consolate Habonimana, another CNDD-FDD party member was shot dead by unidentified people in Kizingwe locality of Kanyosha neighborhood in Bujumbura city.The National Congress for Freedom -CNL party reported over 20 party members arrested in Mubimbi, Isare and Nyabiraba communes in Bujumbura province over shotguns heard in the locality, this 20 February. “One of them died in a communal dungeon after his arrest”, said Térence Manirambona, CNL party spokesperson.

CNIDH Chairman says none should ignore that there isn’t any group or ethnic group that should defend people who have committed offenses. “There is a need to differentiate political affairs from other offenses,” he said, calling justice officials to be partial in such cases.
Sixte Vigny Nimuraba calls on party members to be vigilant on the eve of the elections. “We will continue to live together after the elections and we must consolidate peace and promote human rights throughout the country”, he says adding that sponsors are not happy with the tangible results achieved in different sectors.
