” Today, the Burundian company in charge of supplying water and electricity (REGIDESO) supplies enough electricity but customers do not consume the required quantity,” said Jéroboam Nzikobanyanka, Director General of REGIDESO during a meeting with industrials this Tuesday, January 23. The latter constitute the largest energy consumers in Burundi.
“Some time ago, industrialists complained about the lack of electricity. The problem was solved and it’s now the time for REGIDESO to complain, “said Nzikobanyanka.
Following the electricity shortage that was observed in the country a few months ago, these companies had asked REGIDESO Company to provide them with sufficient quantity of electricity to run well their business.
Electricity has been available since September 2017. “However, it is clear that most manufacturers do not use all the energy provided by REGIDESO,” said Nzikobanyanka.
This low consumption of electricity is caused by the small scale production by industrialists and the lack of foreign currency exchange for importation, say industrials.
As for REGIDESO’s largest customers who accuse it of overcharging them for their products, Nzikobanyanka has reassured them saying that these errors are corrected once reported to the commercial service. He called on customers to pay their electricity bills on time.
If the schedule remains unchanged, the electricity is available from 6 am to midnight since September 2017 after a long period of time Bujumbura residents had been experiencing incessant power cuts.
