Following fake reports of the first case of novel coronavirus-COVID19 in Burundi this March 1, Jean Bosco Girukwishaka Spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Health calls on people to remain calm and respect the measures already taken by the Ministry to reduce the risks of contagion of this virus.
“No case of COVID19 has so far been detected in Burundi,” he says. Mr. Girukwishaka calls on the population to remain vigilant and alert the health services in case they see signs related to COVID19.
He also says a team of health workers including doctors with appropriate equipment has been deployed to Melchior Ndadaye International Airport.
“Every newcomer is screened and a home surveillance is also carried out. Our attention is directed to those who come from China or any other country already affected by this virus,” he says.
This Health Ministry official adds that the incubation period is between 14 and 21 days. He exhorts all students from China to stay at home and register to the administration. He recalls the symptoms of this disease which include fever, headache, cough, breathing difficulties and high temperature.
On 17 February, Li Changlin, Chinese Ambassador to Burundi recommended Burundian students in China who are on holidays in their country to limit their outings and avoid participating in rallies.
As of March 2, the death toll has exceeded 3,000 and more than 89,000 people across 58 countries have been infected.
