Col. Gaspard Baratuza, Burundi Army Spokesperson, says no armed groupshave been noticed crossing the border between the two countries. “Burundi Government will never accept that criminals or troublemakers from neighboring countries find refuge in the country”, he says.
On 12 March, unidentified gunmen perpetrated an attack in Rusizi district, Bugarama sector, Ryankana area of Kabuga village in Rwanda. They killed two persons and wounded one. Lt Col. René Ngendahimana, Defense and Military Spokesperson in Rwanda,says the unidentified gunmen fled to Burundi as the incident took place near the border between Rwanda and Burundi. “It was around 1:00 a.m. when unknownarmed men attacked people who were on “Irondo” (local civilian patrol).
Both the dead and wounded people were patrolling at Health Post while the second one who was killed is a 12 year-old child”, he says.
The Rwanda Defense and Army Spokesperson says investigations into the incident have started to establish the identity of the attackers. Relationships between Burundi and Rwanda have worsened since President Pierre Nkurunziza announced he would run for a controversial presidential thirdterm in April 2015.
Burundi accuses Rwanda, its neighboring country, ofsheltering people prosecuted for serious crimes in Burundi, including the plotters of the 13 May 2015 failed coup.
