The National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) has presented this 28 June the timetable for the upcoming 2020 elections.
Pierre-Claver Kazihise, CENI Chairman has announced the presidential, legislative and communal council elections will be held on the same day (May 20, 2020).
Elections for senators will be held on July 20 while those of the chiefs of zones and neighborhoods will be held on August 24, he adds.
Léonce Ngendakumana, Deputy Chairman of Sahwanya FRODEBU, an opposition party, says the current political context does not augur well for the holding of peaceful and credible elections.
He indicates that the electoral code has been developed without consulting all concerned parties. “The electoral timetable is announced while thousands of Burundians live in exile, others are thrown into prisons for political reasons or abused and some others are in hiding,” says Ngendakumana. This political leader deplores the fact that the political space has been redefined.
“Members of the opposition parties such as CNL and FRODEBU are often arrested while other parties have been suspended,” he says.
For Nancy Ninette Mutoni, Communications Officer of the ruling CNDD-FDD, the electoral calendar will help them adjust their programs.
