Burundian parliamentarians will return to the parliamentary holidays in July. “We have to comply with the new Constitution,” said Pascal Nyabenda, Speaker of the National Assembly on June 4 when opening the ordinary session for June.
He has said Article 179 of the new constitution recently adopted in the referendum held on May 17 reorganizes the parliamentary sessions.
This provision stipulates that the first parliamentary session begins in August, the second in December and the last session in April while parliamentary sessions started in February, in June and in October according to the 2005 Constitution.
Nyabenda has said this reorganization will depend on the promulgation of the new Constitution planned for June 2018 adding that sessions scheduled for June go in the logic of complying with the new constitution.
He has said parliamentarians will adopt in this session the rules of procedure of the National Assembly according to the new Constitution as well as the amendments of the 2018 Finance Act.
Nyabenda has also said “there are a lot of laws that need to be adapted according to the new Constitution “. He however believe the President of the Republic ” has the latitude ” to convene extraordinary sessions during the holidays.
The promulgation of the new Constitution adopted on May 17 will take place on Thursday, June 7, according to a note signed by the Chairman of Burundi President Protocol.
