“Almost 90% of voters withdrew their voting cards within the time limit set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI),” said Pierre Claver Kazihise, Chairman of CENI at a press conference held in the afternoon of 6 May.
The electoral commission conducted activities to issue voting cards to citizens from 30 April to 4 May.
Kazihise said more than 90% of voters withdrew their voting cards in 11 provinces of the country while 80% of them took theirs in six provinces.
“It is only in one province – Bujumbura City – that 70% of voters received their cards,” said Kazihise adding that the activities of issuing voting cards will continue.
“Those who have not withdrawn their cards will be able to take them at the offices of the Independent Communal Electoral Commission until 12 May,” said CENI Chairman adding that after this date, CECI members will be conducting other activities.
He calls on citizens to withdraw their voting cards so that they can participate in the presidential, legislative and municipal elections scheduled for 20 May.
