Lydia Nsekera, current chairperson of Burundi National Olympic Committee told journalists on 20 September that she will run for president of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA). “I will stand as president of the ANOCA in the upcoming elections scheduled for November 29 in Tokyo,” she says.
According to her, following the governance problems that the sports organization is going through, the general assembly of ANOCA held in July 2018 decided to reorganize the elections of its president.
Nsekera believes that it will be a great pride and honor for Burundi if she is elected the head of ANOCA especially this time when the organization is experiencing a crisis since the last elections held in Djibouti in 2017.
She is competing with two candidates, namely Kalkaba Blanchi, chairman of the African Athletics Confederation and also president of the National Olympic Committee of Cameroon and Mustapha Berraf, president of the National Olympic Committee of Algeria.
Lydia Nsekera was once the chair of Burundi Football Federation (FFB) from 2004 to2013. She is also the first woman to have served in the FIFA Executive Committee and a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC)
