The chairwoman of the Association of Sports Journalists of Burundi, Liliane Nshimirimana, has been elected to be part of the governing body of the International Association of Sports Press in Africa-AIPS during its 81st ordinary general assembly Africa held on 8 May in Belgium.
She says it is an honor for both Burundi and her Association. “It is the first time for a woman to be a member of the governing body of this continental association of sports journalism”, she says.
In the AIPS Africa Congress held in Kenya in December 2017, it was noted that women were not represented in decision-making bodies and participants decided to review some articles of AIPS Africa status to enable women to integrate into the executive body.
“As I am the only woman leading an association dominated by male members, I have been elected as a member of the executive board because Burundi was considered as a model,” says Nshimirimana.
She says her election will make it possible for the members of the Association of Sports Journalists of Burundi to be adequately represented in AIPS Africa. “We were previously members of the General Assembly but we are now part of AIPS Africa executive body,” says Nshimirimana before adding that there is a need to consider gender in sports media. “Female journalists in sports field remain few,” she says.
