Léonce Ngendakumana is accused of detrimental charge and false allegation, for sending a letter to the United Nations Secretary-General in February.–By Lorraine Josiane Manishatse
In that letter, Ngendakumana warned for political violence and even genocide in Burundi. He compared the Rema FM radio station to the Rwandese RTLM during the genocide of 1994, and he described the young Imbonerakure of CNDD-FDD as the Interahamwe of Rwanda. He was sentenced in a lawsuit filed by Rema FM radion station and the CNDD-FDD party, the party presently in power.
Léonce Ngendakumana is the President of ADC Ikibiri: the coalition of opposition parties. The sentence was declared on 2 October. A one year prison sentence means that Ngendakumana, who is also the leader of Frodebu, will not be able to take part in the general election of 2015 that will take place in 8 months. This increases the risk of a strained political atmosphere in Burundi.
