At least 24 people were killed seven others wounded in the night of December 4th 2019 due to landslides following heavy rains that poured down in Cibitoke province in the west of Burundi.
Gikomero, Nyempundu, Rwamagasha and Rukombe hills, all located in Mugina commune of the same province were mostly affected.
Local authorities announced a temporary death toll reaching 24 but some families are feared to have been buried by landslides.
“We still can’t find a lot of people. It seems the landslides buried the entire families. Their houses and crops were completely destroyed,” says one of the survivors met in Nyamakarabo area.
Police forces, the Red Cross, local inhabitants all joined efforts in a tireless attempt to rescue victims.
In the meantime, survivors were advised to spend the night in other safer areas.
