A group of people carried out an attack which claimed the lives of 26 people and left 7 others injured in Ruhagarika area of Buganda Commune in Cibitoke western province, in the night of May 11 2018.
“The first elements of the investigation reveal that these criminals came from the Democratic Republic of Congo where they also retreated after committing the crime,” Sylvestre Nyandwi, Attorney General of the Republic of Burundi told journalists in a press conference held on May 14, 2018.
He said the commission of inquiry was set up to identify the perpetrators of the Ruhagarika massacre and their accomplices in order to bring them to justice.
“It has been given one month to conduct the investigation and submit the file to a competent court,” he said.
Burundi Attorney General calls on DRC authorities to be cooperative in the ongoing investigation.“We urge them to hand over the criminals staying on their territory to the Burundian justice,” said Nyandwi.
He called on anyone having information about the Ruhagarika attack to deliver it to the office of the Attorney General so that the criminals should be arrested and punished.
