Fabien Banciryanino, an independent MP elected in Bubanza constituency, says 21 investigated cases of people killed and enforced disappearances have been reported in Mpanda and Gihanga communes of Bubanza province in the west of Burundi from January 2016 to February 2020.
“I conducted deep investigations in their localities and discovered that some were killed and others are victims of enforced disappearances,” says Banciryanino, adding that the latest case of a disappeared person was reported in Gihanga commune on 24 February 2020.
He says those killings and enforced disappearances are related to politics. “The majority of the victims are political opponents from the CNL party,” he says.
MP Banciryanino also says the administrative and judicial officials from those localities are aware of those cases.
“I reported those cases but no investigation has so far been conducted,” he says.
MP Banciryanino also says he submitted a correspondence to the public prosecutor’s department for investigation on March 24.
“I believe that the public prosecutor’s office will conduct serious investigation and allow the victims’ relatives to mourn,” he says.
Jean Claude Nsengiyumva, Prosecutor in Bubanza province says the correspondence has been received. “The magistrate who has the file will summon MP Fabien Banciryanino as soon as possible for more details,” he says.
