Burundi Geographical Institute – IGEBU indicates that the weather forecast for March-April-May (MAM) 2018 is promising. It says a large part of the country is likely to have, in general, normal precipitation that will be mainly characterized by the evolution of the global temperature of the sea surface.
Augustin Ngenzirabona, director of hydrometeorology in IGEBU, says the seasonal rainfall from March to May 2018 in Burundi corresponds to the crop season B that will have a normal climate in almost all the areas of the country, except the north-western part where the rainfall is likely to be heavy.
“The MAM seasonal rainfall has started on 15 February and will end in May”, he says.
Burundi Geographical Institute, however, recognizes that their forecasts are not exact at 100%, the reason why farmers should take reasonable precautions. “The government and communities are recommended to ensure that the areas where rainfall is normal have good food production which will be consumed or sold in areas with a low rainfall,” says Ngenzirabona.
In areas where rainfall is expected to be normal and with increased humidity, farmers are strongly encouraged to grow various crops including planting early crops. “Modern technologies are also recommended to reduce losses and improve production”, he says.
