Gikungu residents face drinking water shortage amid COVID-19 outbreak

Residents of Gihungu neighborhood of Gihosha area in the north of the economic capital Bujumbura say they have not got drinking water since the past few weeks. They fear catching Coronavirus.

One of two public taps installed in Gikungu isn’t working anymore

“We haven’t had access to clean water for more than a month. One of the two taps installed in this neighborhood was turned off,” says a mother of three from Gikungu neighborhood.
For her, a single tap cannot serve all Gikungu residents.
“We are forced to use water from the river,” she says, adding that she fears contracting illnesses caused by poor hygiene.

Abraham Ntirandekura, chief of Gikungu area says Gikungu residents run the risk of contracting coronavirus which is claiming human lives around the world.
“They are deeply concerned that they are not effectively protecting themselves from COVID-19 as we are asked to wash regularly ours hands with clean water which they don’t have,” says Ntirandekura.

He calls on the company distributing water and electricity [REGIDESO] to supply water to that area especially in this critical period. “We have referred this problem to REGIDESO agents, but we have got no feedback from them so far,” says Ntirandekura.

REGIDESO management says it is aware of this problem and is seeking a solution.
