In a plenary session that has taken place this 18 June, Burundi Senate has adjusted its bylaw to the new Constitution promulgated on 7 June 2018. Among the revised points, the article specifying that former presidents become senators for life was removed.
“As you have seen, there were no places reserved for former presidents in this plenary session as it used to be,” says Anicet Niyongabo, Second Deputy President of the Senate after a plenary session that was organized to amend senate bylaws in order to comply with the new Constitution.
The Senate bylaw must comply with the Constitution which regulates it, he says.
The new bylaw will be submitted to the Constitutional Court which will analyze it and see whether or not it complies with the law before its implementation.
