The party accuses the Imbonerakure of heightening persecutions of its militants in the recent days. A declaration issued on Saturday 3 September, mentions more than 30 FNL militants who were arrested last month while 3 others disappeared in Rural Bujumbura, Cankuzo, Muyinga and Ngozi provinces. The Imbonerakure youth are further accused of torching homes and looting properties of their victims.

According to that declaration, the oppression FNL militants are undergoing is a continuation of the 2010 “Safisha” post-electoral plan by the CNDD-FDD ruling party that was aimed at killing FNL militants. Those who were arrested “were found dead, beheaded and then thrown in different rivers of the country”.

The statement is a clarion call to the international community “to come now to rescue the Burundian people victimized by the CNDD-FDD dictatorship”.The FNL party appeals to the UN to apply the UNSC resolution 2303 and send the 228 police officers “to dissuade troublemakers and make the population feel safe from the permanent threat of the Imbonerakure”.

Faced with such allegations, the newly elected CNDD-FDD Secretary, Evariste Ndayishimiye, blames Agathon Rwasa, the FNL leader, of not having filed any formal complaint so far. “Instead of grumbling, submit the cases of harassment of your militants to justice. Has the government ever dismissed any complaint you have made?”, said Ndayishimiye this Sunday at the Isanganiro Radio during the “Kunama” program in which Rwasa participated.
