Democratic Republic of Congo has ordered the expulsion of Scott Campbell, director of the United Nations Joint Human Rights Office (UNJHRO) in Congo, a day after the publication of a UN report detailing serious human rights violations by Congolese security forces.
The expulsion comes amidst rising crime levels. At least 70 people were killed in the east DRCover the past two weeks. Last Saturday, heavily armed gunmen freed about 300 inmates from the central prison of Butembo, a town in North Kivu province. The attacks are “accompanied by rape, torture and mutilations”, according to UN official Maurizio Giuliano.
Several thousand civilians have fled their homes as result, the official added.
