Pierre Claver Ndayicariye, Chairman of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission-CVR says the applicants of testimonies of what happened in 1972 have expressed their wishes to be morally and financially supported by the State. “They accuse the government to be involved in the 1972 killings because the latter were executed by the state agents”, he says.
It was during the presentation on the remains of the people killed in 1972 thrown in Bukirasazi locality, in Shombo commune of Karusi province, this February 14. Out of 18 mass graves reported, CVR exhumed 6032 victims from six mass graves.
According to Pierre Claver Ndayicariye, the victims were teachers, civil servants, religious people, high officials, agents of security forces… all from one ethnic group. He says victims no longer want to see such killings happen again in the country. He also says the victims call on the government to bury with dignity the exhumed remains of the dead.
Pierre Claver Ndayicariye says CVR will continue exhuming all the remains from the 18 mass graves in that locality. In addition, he says, the commission is preparing to bury them with dignity.
CVR Chairman also says Burundi has over 4000 mass graves reported throughout the country. “They contain the victims of different crises that occurred in the country,” he says.
