At “Rutegama Downtown Jazz” hotel, on Avenue de l’Université (Bwiza side) is observed since the past few days, a queue of people, cups in hands, in front of a machine that gives water. Many of them are just bike-taxi users, children of the neighborhood; mechanics … Every passer-by is free to get a cup of cool water. A tap is erected next, to wash the cup before use. This is the initiative of Gilbert Nkurunziza, the boss of this hotel.
“This is just a charitable act,” he said. He also indicated that water is to be drunk on the spot only. According to Nkurunziza, it is an avenue used by a lot of pedestrians, people of all classes (bike taxi users, builders, mechanics, children in the street, etc.). “They are often tired, they should at least get water”, he said.
For him, it is difficult for a bike taxi user to buy water when he earns almost nothing. Gilbert Nkurunziza said the machine and all the plumbing cost him about a million Burundian francs.
