At a press conference held this 29 April, 2020, the spokesman for the Ministry of Public Security has said “they deplore the behavior displayed by some members of political parties during the ongoing electoral campaign.”
Pierre Nkurikiye alludes to an incident that occurred on 27 April during the official launch of the electoral campaign in Ngozi northern Province.
“Members of CNL party kidnapped seven members of CNDD-FDD party and attempted to assassinate one of them,” said Nkurikiye adding that CNL party members seek to disrupt the ongoing political activities that are being conducted peacefully.
Mr Nkurikiye accuses Agathon Rwasa, CNL party chairman of inciting his members to violence.
“He asked them to attack members of the opposing party,” said Nkurikiye, calling on politicians to report violence cases to the administrative and security authorities.
In his speech at the launch of the electoral campaign, Rwasa said that CNL members will now defend themselves against their attackers.
He alluded to the Imborekure [the ruling CNDD-FDD youths] who often prevent CNL members from conducting political activities without providing valid reasons.
The Public Security Ministry spokesman also accuses CNL members of not respecting the itinerary notified to the police on the launch of the electoral campaign. “On their route, they attacked members of the opposition party,” said Nkurikiye.
Térence Manirambona, spokesman for CNL party rejects the accusations by the police.
He explains that CNL members intercepted two CNDD-FDD youths who were recording the license plates of the vehicles that were transporting CNL members to the stadium where the official launch of the electoral campaign was taking place.
He rather accuses Pierre Nkurikiye of covering the crimes committed by CNDD-FDD youths.
