Sylvain Habanabakize, Spokesperson for the Burundian association fighting for patients’ rights (CEMABU) says the decision by the administration of Kamenge University Hospital banning the use of smartphones during working hours will improve the reception condition of patients.
“We often complained about the bad behavior of some health workers and administrative officials when receiving patients. They spend a long time on their smartphones instead of listening to the concerns of patients,” says Habanabakize.
In communiqué issued on February 23, Pontien Ndabashinze, CHUK Managing Director said some staff members are much more distracted by the smartphones during working hours.
“They were no longer performing their daily activities perfectly,” he said.
He also said the administrative officials and health workers will only use mobile phones without a “WhatsApp” application. Those who won’t comply with this decision which also concerns students will be punished.
Sylvain Habanabakize exhorts the CHUK managing director to also train those administrative and health officials on how they should receive patients well. “This is a good decision that should inspire other health centers,” he says adding that the establishment of accompanying measures is very important to make this measure a success.
