On the eve of the celebration of Christmas Day on 25 December, the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Burundi (CECAB) says there are some facts indicating that the situation in the country needs to be improved.
Bishop Joachim Ntahondereye, Chairman of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Burundi says the step already achieved in different communities over the past years has helped Burundians live in harmony while the signing of the Arusha Agreement and the establishment of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission have brought hope to Burundians. “These initiatives have allowed thousands of Burundians to return home from exile,” he says.
He, however, says Burundians don’t now participate massively in different activities including mass celebrations and biblical teachings.
Bishop Ntahondereye also says political parties are not willing to sit together and find solutions to the current problems in the country. “The situation doesn’t ensure Burundians notably those who are still living in exile,” he said adding that even those living in the country fear to express themselves on the current situation. Bishop Joachim Ntahondereye also wonders whether or not the Truth and Reconciliation Commission will really achieve its goals to reconcile Burundians.
The Chairman of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Burundi appeals to all Burundians especially political leaders to work hard for the interest of the population.
