Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza has promulgated on June 7 the new constitution adopted through a constitutional referendum held on May 17, 2018. Political parties of the opposition and the international community condemned the amendment to the constitution arguing that it violates the Arusha Peace and Reconciliation Agreement and allows the current president to govern until 2034.
“I inform Burundians and the world that I will keep my promise. My term in office as Burundi President will run out in 2020, “said on 7 June President Pierre Nkurunziza in his address to the nation on the occasion of the promulgation of the new constitution, in Bugendana commune of Gitega central province.
He has said the constitution has not adopted for him. “The Constitution has not been amended for President Nkurunziza as the enemies of Burundi have been peddling it in recent days. The Constitution has been amended for the sake of the good, dignity, tranquility and bright future of Burundi and its people, “he has said.” As far as I’m concerned, I am committed and fully prepared to support the president that we will elect in 2020, “he said.
Pancrace Cimpaye, spokesman for CNARED, the opposition platform in exile, says Burundi government has decided to change the 2005 constitution to allow the current president to rule the country forever. “If he were ready to leave power in 2020, he would not amend the constitution. It is clear that the new constitution was developed for President Nkurunziza, “says Cimpaye.
“The Burundian people adopted the constitution and the Constitutional Court has already validated it. Therefore, the next and crucial step was its promulgation, “said Abel Gashatsi, chairman of UPRONA party. For him, it belongs to all Burundian without any discrimination.
