In a press briefing held on June 18th, the Ministry of Agriculture says the production increased over the last agricultural season.

Déo Guide Rurema calls on producers and the central administration to fight against any form of speculation

Déo Guide Rurema, Minister of Agriculture and Livestock says the agricultural production has increased over the last three months. He explains that the availability of fertilizers, rational exploitation of marshes, protection of the environment and organization of farmers into cooperatives are some factors of the production increase.

Consequently, he says, the increase in agricultural harvest resulted in food price decrease on markets. “A kilo of beans moved from BIF1, 200 to 830, that of rice from BIF1, 640 to BIF1, 340 and a kilo of banana moved from BIF400 to BIF 320,” says the Minister of Agriculture.

Mr. Rurema advises farmers not to waste their agriculture harvest of the last three months.

He calls on food producers and the central administration to fight any kind of speculation as some traders seek to steal the production from those who have harvested. “All those who will go against these measures will be seriously punished,” he warns.

Mr. Rurema calls on farmers “to keep the production in order to cope with food insecurity that might be caused by climate change. As for what can be done to fight food insecurity in the next agricultural season, the Minister of Agriculture calls on the entire population and administration to protect the environment.

He also says fertilizers will no longer be imported from overseas as farmers will use fertilizers made locally.

The Minister of Agriculture says the harvest has been better than in 2018 over the last three months and adds that it is likely to double or triple in the next agricultural season.
