Tensions are high in the Malawi capital following the murder of a Malawian national at the hands of a Burundian refugee. The 40 year old suspect runs a business in atownshipof Lilongwe. On Sunday night the victim came to have a beer and left without settling the bill of 800 Malawi kwacha (slightly less than $2).
In the fight that ensued, the Malawian was stabbed to death. Residents of the township looted the Burundians shop and his house before the police came in to calm the situation. “We have arrested the suspect and we have managed to contain the situation”, explains police spokesman KingsleyDandaula.After the suspect and his family fled the area, residents vented their anger on other Burundian residents in the township.
