“We have learned that bicycle-taxi riders complained about the measure that was taken, forcing them to purchase number plates for their bicycles. We, then, decided to suspend the disputed measure, “said Jean Bosco Ntunzwenimana Minister of Transport.

He said the department in charge of controlling the transportation sector has not been consulted. “I will never accept any disorder in this sector,” said Minister Ntunzwenimana.

He promised to speak with all the concerned people on this issue. “We will analyze the matter with all concerned departments to find a solution to the complaints of bicycle-taxi riders who have already bought these license plates,” said Ntunzwenimana.

Christophe Kinshasa, Economic Advisor at the Bujumbura City Council had explained that the measure would facilitate the identification of each bicycle for the payment of taxes.

“Even article 434 of the Burundi Traffic Code states that any bicycle used for paid transportation must have an identification plate issued by the municipality, “he said.

It’s a relief for bicycle-taxi riders as the measure was like a burden for them. “I have not been able to pay for that plate. I only earn BIF 2,500 a day. After buying food, I only remain with BIF 1,500F. Besides, I have other needs. It is difficult to collect BIF 8,000”, said a bicycle-taxi rider.

The measure was taken by the Mayor of Bujumbura and December 21 was the deadline for bicycle taxi riders to purchase license plates at a price of BIF 8000 each.
