Burundi president urges voters to participate in 2020 elections

“Political parties, coalitions of political parties and independent candidates who meet conditions set by law and wish to stand for the upcoming 2020 elections must submit their candidacy files to the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) headquarters from 25 February to 5 March, 2020,” announced Pierre Claver Kazihise, CENI chairman at a press briefing held on 24 February.

The candidates for the legislative elections must submit their files from 25 February to 10 March to CENI office while candidates for the elections of the municipal councilors will submit their files to Provincial Electoral Commissions offices from 25 February to 5 March, 2020.
The candidates for the Senate elections will submit their files to CENI office from 27 May to 10 June.

Mr Kazihise indicated that CENI refers to the presidential decree inviting voters to participate in the next 2020 elections signed on 20 February, 2020.

According to the same decree, the presidential, legislative and municipal council elections will be held on 20 May, 2020 while the senators’ elections will take place on 20 July, 2020.

CENI requires the signature of the legal representative of the political party or coalition of political parties to submit the candidacy files.
CENI chairman calls on the candidates for the elections to inform CENI before coming to submit their files so that it prepares to receive them.
