Déo Guide Rurema, Minister of Agriculture has brought before parliament a bill on the management of pesticides which was later adopted by all MPs, this Wednesday 7 March 2018.
Rurema says experts and other international organizations have shown that the good way of managing pesticides is to adopt a specific law. “This will help to distribute sufficient pesticides to the right people and at the right moment”, he says.
He also says this is a strategy adopted all over the world. “All countries agreed that there is a need to monitor how pesticides are manufactured, sold and used”.
Nyabenda Pascal, Chairman of the Assembly, says there is uncontrolled usage of the packaging of pesticides. “Some people use insecticides packaging in their daily life. For example, jerry cans, bags which are sold at the market…I cannot even understand how people have not yet died”, he wonders.
Déo Guide Rurema says this bill comes as an answer to such questions because it will allow usage regulations.
Térence Manirambona, a MP, asks if the adoption of the bill may help control fraudulent pesticides. “There are some pesticides used in fraudulent ways because some people say they do not get enough pesticides. Does this new law bring any solution?” He wonders.
The minister of agriculture answers that even though the bill may be adopted, people should be sensitized to the appropriate use of pesticides.
After series of questions, the bill was adopted at one hundred percent.
