“The price of fuel has gone up, the price of 1 liter of gasoline and diesel at gas station will cost BIF 2250, has declared this Friday 19 January, Léonidas Sindayigaya, Spokesman for the Ministry of the Energy and Mines.
Before this decision was taken to increase the fuel price, the official price of both gasoline and diesel was BIF 2100 per liter.
He explains that the price of this product has increased by BIF 150 per liter because this product has also increased by 20% on the international market since June 2017. Sindayigaya says authorities from the Ministry of Energy and Mines will consult those from the Ministry of Commerce to fix the prices of some products in order to avoid speculations.
Charles Ntirampeba, the Secretary General of the Association of Public Transit System in Burundi (ATRABU) predicts that the transport price will also increase. He estimates that the bus fare in Bujumbura which was BIF 350 per passenger will be increased to BIF 380.
Noël Nkurunziza, Chairman of the Burundian Association of Consumers regrets that the oilmen did not buy fuel when the price of the barrel was considerably reduced on the international market. He wonders why oilmen do not build up reserves so that once the price increases they do not immediately raise it.
