Every March 1st, the world celebrates the Civil Protection World Day. On the eve of this celebration, the government of Burundi reminds everyone of their responsibility for disaster risk reduction.
Serges Ntakavura, Assistant to the ministry of public security, says recurrent disasters cause damage at an alarming level. “From the beginning of the growing season A till now, 49 people have died, 2933 homes damaged, 1225 houses and 200 classrooms completely destroyed and 14,163 ha of fields damaged as well,” he says.
Ntakavura asks everybody to get involved in disaster and risk prevention. “The government of Burundi calls on public authorities, communities, civil society and the private sector to become more involved in disaster risk reduction activities to cope with any eventuality”.
Burundi joined the International Civil Protection Organization on 19th February 2009 and the Civil Protection World Day is celebrated yearly. The theme for this year is “Civil protection and national institutions for more effective disaster management.”
