Reinforcing measures to prevent Ebola disease by multiplying control posts on unknown pathways at the borders is one of the major activities to be undertaken by Burundi and the DRC. It was revealed during a meeting organized in the economic capital Bujumbura between the Burundian delegation and South Kivu delegation of the DRC.
Burundi Governors of provinces bordering with the DRC and the prosecutors of those provinces were present in the meeting. The Burundian provinces are Cibitoke, Bubanza, Bujumbura, Rumonge, Makamba provinces as well as Bujumbura Capital. Astère Ndayisaba, Assistant to Bujumbura Mayor who read the final communiqué has said they will meet after six months to assess the situation.
Théo Ngwabidje Kasi, Governor of South Kivu region of the DRC has said the close collaboration will allow them to find solutions to regional issues. “We are not only concerned by Ebola disease, but we should also deal with the security and education issues”, said Governor Ngwabidje. He said they convened to also fight against negative forces based in the South Kivu region of the DRC.
The Burundian Ministry of Public Health had begun a vaccination campaign against Ebola virus at Gatumba border post on 13 August. Beneficiaries are the front line health workers. Since Ebola virus disease was declared in the DRC on 1 August 2018, WHO reported that 1,898 people already died until 12 August.
