Bujumbura: Muha bridge on the verge of collapsing

The bridge linking Mukaza commune to that of Muha in the Burundian capital at National Road 3 is about to collapse. The situation was worsened by the heavy rain that fell on 18 January. The installations of the company in charge of supplying water and electricity are not protected.

Nothing protects the bridge from collapsing on the northern side. A big gully threatens the bridge. On the southern side of the bridge, there is a big pothole which also threatens National Road 3.

People living in the vicinity fear that the bridge will collapse at any moment if nothing is done. “If it rains for two or three consecutive times, the bridge will collapse altogether,” says an inhabitant met on the spot adding that competent authorities should intervene before it is too late. “When the rain falls, the Muha River becomes full and destroys everything on its way.” He also says all waters from the mountains overhanging Bujumbura city drain into this river.

Iwacu has tried to contact the office in charge of roads and the local administration but to not avail.
