A group of armed men invaded the office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR) in the early morning of this Wednesday, 13 September 2017. After terrorizing watchmen, they forcibly entered the compound of the UNHCHR. “It was around 2 p.m. After pulling guns on security guards, six armed men broke into the UNHCHR office”, said a security agent met on the spot.

Police say they have initiated investigations. “We have received complaints from the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. Two watchmen have been arrested for investigative reasons”, says Pierre Nkurikiye, police spokesman.

Elizabeth Throssell, Media and Communications Officer at the UN human rights office in Geneva says the information about the attack will be given after thorough investigations.

The break-in occurred a week after a UN commission of inquiry reported possible crimes against humanity in Burundi.

Its report includes extrajudicial executions, arbitrary arrests, torture, rape and enforced disappearances which have been committed in Burundi since April 2015.

Burundi government has suspended its collaboration with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights since October 2016.
