Prosper Ntahorwamiye, Spokesperson for the National Independent Electoral Commission-CENI says the coalition of independents “Amizero y’Abarundi” has registered at the National Electoral Commission to run the campaign for the constitutional referendum scheduled for 17 May 2018. “As they have the right to conduct the referendum campaign, they also have the right to call people to vote for or against the constitutional amendment,” says Ntahorwamiye.
He also says the Electoral Commission does not have any problem with the new “group” from “Amizero y’Abarundi” coalition calling people to vote for the constitutional referendum.
On 5 May, a group of executives and intellectuals who claim to belong to the coalition “Amizero y’Abarundi” said they would vote for the constitutional referendum scheduled for May 17. Their call is contrary to that of the coalition chaired by Agathon Rwasa, First Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly urging people to vote “No” in the upcoming referendum.
The group accuses Agathon Rwasa of bitterly opposing this draft revision of the Constitution either through media or official declarations and wonders the motives behind this hostility.
Evariste Ngayimpenda, Deputy Chairman of the coalition of the independent coalition says the “new group” aims at disrupting the referendum. “Who has mandated them as the members of the coalition’s executive body are known? Are they the only intellectuals of Amizero y’Abarundi?” wonders Ngayimpenda. “Whenever there is a strong political organization or trade union association, the government tries to dismantle it. That’s the case today”, he adds.
