A tradesman declared 1500 boxes of Ugandan ‘highland’ milk, instead of the 2100 he brought into the country. The port authority caught him. “He will pay dearly for it.”–By J.Berchmans Siboniyo
On Thursday morning, Frederic Manirambona, the Commissioner of Customs and Duties from the Burundi Revenue Office exposed the Burundian tradesman. “We were informed by our informers from Kobero, Muyinga and we followed the tradesman as far as the port. He will pay dearly for his crime because he must pay a 50%- fine for the undeclared products. After that he’ll pay the regular tax for both those and the products he declared”, says Manirambona.
He indicates that the fraudster must pay another fine for using fake US Dollar bills. All in all that the tradesman will eventually pay BIF 28,773,663, where he would paid only BIF 9,098,228 if he didn’t cheat. “Tradesmen will not succeed in cheating because the Port is increasing and improving its techniques of catching fraudsters”, the commissioner warns. He gives the example of a scanner and informers who are in all places where commercial activity takes place.
