The electoral commission announced on Monday 24 February that the submission of files of candidates for presidential election is scheduled from 25 February to 5 March while the candidates for legislative election are expected to submit their files from 25 February to 10 March at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Pierre Claver Kazihise, CENI chairman has said that the deadlines for submitting candidates’ files will not be extended arguing that CENI complies with the presidential decree urging voters to participate in the 2020 elections.

At a press conference he held after submitting his candidacy at CENI, the ruling party boss has reassured that the 2020 elections will be organized peacefully.
He downplays the attacks of armed groups recently reported in Bujumbura Province. “Criminals and thieves still exist. It is therefore important that the population and the security forces remain vigilant in order to combat them if they attack, “has said Ndayishimiye.

These attacks have fueled panic and fear because they are being carried out in the run-up to the elections, he has added.

Mr Ndayishimiye reassures the population that these criminals will not disturb the ongoing electoral process.
“I am confident that the elections will be held smoothly since members of different political parties coexist peacefully,” said Ndayishimiye.
