Mr. Yeo Han-Koo, a special envoy for the Korean Foreign Minister, is visiting Burundi for two days. He comes to ask for the support of the Burundian government in the Korean government’s bid for the World Expo 2030 to be held in Busan.

Running for the World Expo 2030, the South Korean government has sent a special envoy to Burundi to ask for its support in holding the World Expo in Busan, South Korea. Mr. Yeo Han-Koo, the special envoy and former trade minister for Korea, indicated that his visit also aims to extend bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

The special envoy from South Korea stressed his belief that the Burundian support in the Korea’s bid for the World Expo 2030 will be hugely beneficial for both countries. In this context, he pinpointed agriculture, education, minerals and investment in EAC countries as potential areas of cooperation.

“The Korean Government aims to invite the largest number of developing countries in history of the World Expo to the Busan World Expo 2030, and will actively share Korea’s development experience with Burundi”.

In addition, the special envoy for the South Korean Foreign Minister mentioned that KOICA (Korea International Cooperation Agency) is positively considering opening an office in Burundi in order to facilitate cooperation in the development sphere. He also introduced the Saemaeul Movement, a South Korean development program, and stated that there are already four pilot villages in Nyambuye, Mugina, Bisoro and Nyanza-Lac and a women’s high school which hosts 225 young girls.

“We plan to establish six other pilot villages in Busoro, Nyabiraba, Ruziba, Rugeregere, Nyabisiga and in Bukeye under the Saemaeul Movement. Currently, a big team of experts from Korea is here in Burundi to support all these ten villages”.

For this World expo 2030, the South Korea is competing with Saoui Arabia, Italy and Ukraine.
